Gorilla trekking is physically demanding, weather-unpredictable, and unlike almost any other activity you’ll do on safari. Packing the right gear makes the difference between an uncomfortable slog and a day you’ll talk about for years.

Clothing Wear long trousers and a long-sleeved shirt in neutral, muted colors — greens, khakis, and browns work best, as bright colors can startle wildlife. Bwindi’s forest floor is thick with stinging nettles and biting ants, so tucking trousers into your socks is a small habit that saves a lot of discomfort. Bring a lightweight rain jacket regardless of season; the forest is called “impenetrable” for a reason, and a shower can arrive without warning.

Footwear Sturdy, ankle-supporting hiking boots with good grip are essential. The terrain is steep, muddy, and often slippery, and gaiters are a smart addition to keep debris and insects out of your boots.

Gear A daypack to carry water, snacks, and a rain jacket; gardening gloves for gripping vegetation on steep sections; a walking stick (usually available for hire at the trailhead); and a reusable water bottle, since trekking can take anywhere from one to six hours round trip.

Other Essentials Insect repellent, sunscreen, a hat, and a small first aid kit with blister plasters. If you plan to photograph the gorillas, bring a camera with a zoom lens rather than relying on a phone — you’ll often be several metres from the group, and flash photography is prohibited.

A Few Practical Notes Porters are available to hire at the trailhead for a modest fee, and we’d strongly recommend it — they carry your bag, help you over difficult terrain, and the fee directly supports the local community. Trekking permits also come with a strict minimum age requirement (15 years), so plan family trips accordingly.

Above all, come with realistic expectations about the physical effort involved and a flexible mindset — the trek length depends entirely on where the gorilla family happens to be that day, and every trek tells a slightly different story.
